The smell test

Before you call her picky, smell her plate.

Wet a silicone plate with warm water and hold it to your nose. If it smells of dish soap, that is what she tastes at every meal.

Silicone takes oil into itself — food oil, the fragrance oil in detergent — and keeps it. Lemon, vinegar, a boil: each empties it for a while, and then it fills again. Nothing on the surface is wrong. The material is.

Porcelain, fired until it vitrifies, is closer to glass than to clay. Nothing goes in, so nothing stays. Rinse, and it is clean.

Care and safety

The material

Porcelain, next to silicone, stainless steel and plastic.

Most toddler plates today are silicone or stainless steel. Ours is porcelain, fired twice, the second time at 1,200–1,300 °C, until the clay vitrifies — closer to glass than to pottery. Nothing soaks in. That is the whole argument.

Silicone

Soft, and fine to drop. But it holds on to what touches it.

What every piece has to pass

We make one kind of thing, and we make it to a fixed specification. These four rules decide what we ship and what we send back.

Porcelain, or nothing

Vitrified at 1,200–1,300 °C. No plastic, no melamine, no bamboo fibre in anything we make — whatever those cost less to produce.

Artwork inside the glaze

Fired in, never printed on. If a decoration can wear off in a dishwasher, it does not leave the factory.

A base that stays put

Food-grade silicone, flat underneath, with no suction cup. It holds the plate steady through the meal, lifts off cleanly after, and turns over to become the lid.

Tested for lead and cadmium
